Let’s support International Albinism Day, June 13, 2023

Each year on International Albinism Day I encourage readers to consider learn more about Albinism. Born with the inherited condition myself, a condition which affects my sight and skin health, I have had my own struggles with discrimination, ostracization and frustrated ambitions.

My complaints are so minor in comparison to many youth and some adults LIVING in Southern Africa, and especially In Tanzania. It is no exaggeration to say that many Albinos living in remote areas face rejection from family and community members. Many are threatened with physical violence and in some instances, murder.

I am pleased to support the Canadian charity Under the Same Sun and to encourage others to do likewise. Here is a recent post from UTSS which I ask you to read and consider a response. Thank you for your time. Ken Gray

From Under the Same Sun

We’re just one day away from International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) with the theme of: INCLUSION IS STRENGTH.

Here at Under The Same Sun, we truly believe that when we embrace inclusion, we unlock the incredible potential of every individual. It’s all about celebrating diversity and creating a world where everyone feels valued and empowered.

I have a story to share with you today, about a remarkable young boy named Dalali. His journey has been a rollercoaster of rejection and exclusion. From a young age, he faced rejection from his own family because of his albinism, resulting in a difficult and painful upbringing, which tragically included the loss of his younger brother who also had albinism. Dalali also endured name-calling and discrimination in his village, and eventually had to seek refuge in a boarding center due to multiple attacks against people with albinism in his region. But then, something wonderful happened.

Through Under The Same Sun’s (UTSS) Education Program, Dalali found a place where he was embraced and included. He received the education, care, and support he deserved. Dalali’s transformation was incredible—he blossomed in an environment where albinism was understood and his unique qualities were celebrated. The kindness and friendship he experienced replaced the hurtful words of the past. With newfound confidence, Dalali became a leader, inspiring others and helping them overcome their own challenges.

Nowadays, Dalali is pursuing his dreams at university, studying finance and economics. UTSS not only provided him with educational opportunities but also instilled in him a deep sense of belonging and the belief that he can make a real difference. Dalali’s journey beautifully exemplifies the immense strength that comes from inclusion and the life-changing power of having a supportive community where everyone is valued and appreciated for who they are.

And speaking of inclusion, our upcoming Summer Camp is a shining example of its power. Over 200 students with albinism from all across Tanzania come together to experience a safe and accepting environment. It’s a place where they can truly be themselves, gain confidence, and form lifelong connections with others.

We would be absolutely thrilled if you could join us in celebrating IAAD 2023 and promoting inclusion for people with albinism by making a donation to help make summer camp a reality for students with albinism.

Together, let’s create a world where everyone feels valued and embraced for exactly who they are.

Thank you, as always, for your incredible support. We truly appreciate it, and it makes a world of difference.

Best regards, Francis Tiangson at Under The Same Sun
