The debate is over. There is no debate—Harris won; even Fox News agrees. Of course they blame the hosts who knew what, and who they were facing, and were prepared. Nothing less that letting time and the tape play out would please conservative commentators.
Harris was intelligent, careful, needling, emotive, engaging, real, appropriately reactive, and presidential. Americans had an excellent opportunity to see her responses to all the hot-button issues of the day—only thing missing in whole or in part was guns; I suspect the dems will leave that to Tim Walz who goes head to head with JD next round.
Harris never plays up gender though I bet a lot of Americans still have trouble seeing their president as a woman. And of course, we get the Don-Old nutbar stuff around cats and dogs, massive crowds, and the execution of children. Same old stuff. And some people believe this s**t. Out of the mouth of . . . Don-Old.
A commentator from the Washington Post said it best: “He lives in his own universe” a cosmos not far enough away for my money. Yet people still think they would be welcome there. Newsflash: there is only room for one in Don’s place. Him. Message to Starship Enterprise (Happy Anniversary Star Trek), avoid at all costs. No intelligent life there.
One final thing. Debates don’t really matter; they are for contestants to lose, not win. The cheating now ramps up especially at state levels. You heard of pork barreling, and gerrymandering. These are nothing next to the new round of cheating, of restricting voter access, of preparing to challenge every outcome including losing at every level.
No one likes a loser, especially Don-Old and his republican minders. I wonder what January 6, 2025 will look like? In the Catholic and Protestant liturgical calendars this is Epiphany, the Feast of the showing, the discovery, the appearance, of divine goodness and presence. North American politics could be different, and if Blue wins, then there is a possibility of a real shift in cultural tone and political practice, an effect necessary in Canada and here in BC.
