[Ken Gray] As son, Cameron and I have tickets for a Jays game in Toronto in late July, I have all sorts of fears. For one thing, they are playing the Tampa Bay Rays with whom they are frequently on the losing end. The experience of a win in the Rogers Centre is a huge motivator; I suspect a loss would lead to a long and sad funerial cortege.
Another concern, if the roof is open, is sunburn. I will take my usual coterie of sun shirts, wide brimmed hats, dark glasses, and a water bottle. That said, bright sun and I don’t mesh well.
My biggest fear is being hit by a stray ball in the stands. I have my own sad history with ball sports. Whether Cricket or Baseball, my performance on the field has been described as lack-lustre, and by some, dangerous. I was removed from sports at my junior boys’ school after I bowled a Cricket ball into the back of Peter Bryant’s head. Sorry Peter. Seriously.
The idea of tracking a fast flying, brutally hit, bat-splitting and fast spinning foul ball terrifies me. That said, this is what is meant by the phrase “taking one for the team.” Hopefully Cameron can intercept it prior to impact — but will he then give me the ball? Not so sure.
In Tuesday’s game, (26th, 2026) also at Rogers Centre, a fan caught two balls in succession from his seat. [Watch the video here.] He kept the first and donated the second to some lucky kid seated nearby. Here is the story, from Brent Maguire, MLB.com
Seated in the front row down the right-field line toward the foul pole at Rogers Centre, [a Jays fan] started off his night by snagging a second-inning foul ball from Toronto’s Lenyn Sosa. In all of his glory, the fan celebrated what he likely assumed would be his one and only moment in the spotlight.
As fate would have it, that same fan caught another one in the fifth inning, this off the bat of Daulton Varsho.
“The same guy!” the Toronto broadcasters exclaimed.
After keeping the first souvenir, the generous Jays fan decided to give the second one to a young Toronto supporter seated a few rows away.
Not a bad night at the ballpark for this fan and his lucky benefactor. Also a win for the Jays.
