Hey Porter

So here’s the good news. Kathie and I are off to Ontario for some holiday and a Blue Jays game. Go Jays, sigh . . .

We are leaving Juno at home with some trusted friends who are also house and dog sitters. And burglars take note, if you decide to break in I guarantee Juneo will wake the neighbourhood in response. Forewarned is forearmed.

I am not crazy about travel any more. I am officially a home body. But we will have fun meeting up with relations. We will briefly tour Toronto. It will be hot and muggy; which rhymes with buggy. Oh well; I will take one for the team this time, with pleasure, promised WIFI, a cabin outdoor biffy, and strong, hot morning coffee. Did I say “hot?”

We are flying with Porter Airlines. The reviews on Porter are really good. It will likely take me the outgoing trip to configure the free onboard WIFI. I get to board before others which helps with luggage storage. Free drinks, some snacks, and a friendly smile are all but guaranteed. Watch this space, see what happens.

Every time I think about “Porter” I hear Johnny Cash. Hey, Porter” is a song by Johnny Cash. It was recorded on September 1, 1954, and released as a single in May the following year. It tells the story of a train journey home to Tennessee, from the point of view of an excited passenger who continually asks the porter for updates. [WIKI] Have a listen here.

I think I will write my own version of Hey Porter, this time addressing the airline and not any attendant. See what you think:

Hey Porter, hey Porter, the sun shines in my eyes
I love the light, but wonder, might we point t’wards eastern skies
I’m stuck here in this budget seat for long, and longer still
I might just order up my lunch so I can get my fill

Hey Porter, hey Porter, I’m looking for some snacks
Some salty, sugared, junky food that gives out heart attacks
My tummy’s sore, my throat is dry, my gut just want it’s lunch
Then close my eyes, and swallow slow, and dream of crunch, crunch, crunch

Hey Porter, hey Porter, I see we’re getting near
I’m glad you’re here to help me out, you’ve calmed my anxious fear
I’ll see you on the trip going back, there’s one thing left to do
I haven’t got my WIFI up so that one’s up to you

  1. Thanks for remembering Johnny Cash. Safe travels! (We’re also travelling with Porter when we go to Ottawa in August. I used to use Porter a lot on short flights between Ottawa and Toronto. This long flight will be interesting….)
