OH AMERICA — Wisdom from Anne Lamott

What can I possibly add to the jubilation and commentary of Tuesday night and the next morning? We done did it, cut off the head of the snake. We got our miracle. A new world begins.

Of course there is one tiny, tiny problem which is that going forward is going to be hard and messy, even without knowing what violence and insanity Trump will need to enact in order to calm and affirm himself.

But we are good at messy and hard, especially those of us who are ever- so-slightly less young. We have a battered old tool box with things that reliably help us stay more-or-less centered.

As Saint Wavy G said, “Dare to struggle, dare to grin.”

Unlike those who are currently barely-still-in power, we know we are not hungry for what we are not amassing, but for what we are not giving. We know that it is our sacred duty to take care of the poor, and if this is not a priority, Jesus and Vishnu and Buddha and Allah get together for cocktails and roll their eyes at how much work they still have ahead of them with you.

We are great at grassroots and registering voters, and we will need to plug in again wholeheartedly—you guys raised $23,000 to support liberal candidates— not today. Do nothing useful for the next election; I command you. Today we exercise our capacity for joy, love, caring, compassion, hugs and laughter. This is our superpower. Crack open that bottle of Martinellis! Eat your body weight in carrot cake. Go crazy—Marybe skip the gym, the dry eye do presses, and flossing (don’t tell my dentist.)

We know how to be a part of healing the earth, donating to the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and the World Wildlife Fund, picking up litter and recycling. We remember Mother Teresa saying that no one can do great things but we can all do small things with great love. So tomorrow, we will get back to the joyful work of service.

MAGA is over. Musk is in terrible shape, as he depends on government contracts. Tesla is tanking. Vance and Cruz are toast.

You can’t get from where we were to where we are this morning. The plates of the earth have shifted. I give thanks and breathe in amazement. You can’t get from where we were to where we are this morning. The plates of the earth have shifted. I give thanks and breathe in amazement.
