Preserving our memories — A Summerland legacy project

From Paws n Tails Photography, Summerland BC

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I wanted to do with my photography after everything that has happened here.

I had planned an August opening special to introduce Paws N Tails Photography to Summerland. But after the fire, that just didn’t feel right anymore.

We are so new here, and yet during one of the most frightening times for our family, we were embraced by this community and by people from all over the Okanagan. There was food. Donations. Offers of help. Hugs from people we barely knew. People simply showed up.

And through all of it, I kept thinking about the animals.

My own animals have been such a comfort to me. I watched the posts about missing pets hoping for reunions, celebrated when they happened, and felt the heartbreak when they didn’t.

Photography is how I know how to preserve stories. So instead of an opening special, I want to give something back.

Still Here: A Summerland Legacy Project is a free community photography project about the people, animals, and stories that carried us through.

Your story might be about the animal that never left your side. A pet that was lost and found. Horses or livestock that had to be moved. Someone who helped get your animals to safety. A neighbour who opened their home. A loss you want remembered. Or simply a quiet story about what your animal meant to you during those days.

The photographs may be of animals on their own, people with their animals, or some of the people who showed up for others.

There is no cost and nothing to purchase. This is my gift to a community that has already made us feel like we belong.

I hope to include as many stories as I possibly can.

If you’d like to be part of Still Here, or you know someone whose story deserves to be remembered, I’d love to hear from you.
