Finally, PRIDE in Summerland

On Saturday, June 13, 2026 Summerland United Church with St. Stephen Anglican Church hosted the first ever PRIDE parade in our little town. Sure, such events have been a regular feature on the coast since the 1990s. They have also become a staple event in larger centres in the BC interior such as Kamloops and Kelowna. Support, however, in smaller towns has been less enthusiastic. Here in Summerland, 2SLGBTQ+ persons have received quiet support for years, but there has never been a parade, until now.

Proud Summerland Anglicans

The Rev. Anne Ellis from Summerland United Church was surprised when what started out as a quiet congregational event quickly attracted the support of a range of community organizations, leaders, and supporters. Even a local winery offered free tasting sessions for walkers. “It quickly became a community-wide event which is so great,” she said. The Rev. Canon Roger Cooper brought prayers and greetings from our Anglican congregation and led the pilgrimage with Rev. Anne. Yours truly joined the parade from every photographic angle imaginable.

While to my knowledge no one counted, I suspect 100-150 participants of all ages gathered in the church parking lot prior to departure. As the crowd gathered, participants created costumes and signs; the mood was truly celebratory. Following speeches and much merriment, some walked; some ran; some roved about on their motor scooters. All along the parade route people honked car horns blessing the trek with enthusiasm.

As a former rector of St. Stephen’s from the 1990s I could only reflect how much times have changed, for the good. One social media commenter said they were disgusted and that the church “should stay out of politics.” Another asked what time we met for worship and said they “would see us Sunday morning.”

Such events literally take the church into the street, into the public square, connecting with culture and lived experience, speaking up for justice, for all. Shockingly, homophobia is still a force throughout North America. Just look south of the border, where Trans persons are the target of choice for Trumpians. Look no further than Alberta where a veritable war against Transgender youth continues. So despite such parades seeming passé, the need for public expression remains.

The affirming leadership team drawn from both congregations

So well done folks. You have brought out the very best in us. Summerland is proud of you. So grateful for your leadership. See you next year.
